Winterim
Winterim and Its Purpose
Winterim is a two-week session between the first and second semesters. It provides students at WLS with opportunities for additional work in areas of personal interest, as well as allows them to work in areas not normally part of the seminary curriculum. Winterim courses are taken for credit. As space permits, Winterim courses are open to WELS/ELS pastors and students from WELS/ELS seminaries.
Winterim Seminary Student Requirements
All members of the junior, middler, and senior classes are required to participate in Winterim. Students must take a minimum of three Winterim units in each Winterim and may take a maximum of five Winterim units each year. Students may audit a course, if there is space that has not been filled by those taking the course for credit. In addition to the courses offered on-campus by the WLS faculty and guest instructors, students are also able to propose directed reading and research projects and practical experiences to cover all or part of the requirements. In conjunction with the seminary, synodical agencies may sponsor off-campus experiences and invite students to participate during Winterim.
Winterim Called Worker Opportunities
Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary once again invites called workers to attend our Winterim session, the intensive two-week period between the semesters during which students sign up for a variety of elective courses.
We believe that there are two benefits to be gained from pastors or other called workers attending Winterim. First of all, there is the aspect of continuing education. Courses taken during Winterim can be credited to your STM or MAR program, normally carried out during summer quarter, on- and off-campus. The second benefit we see is the opportunity for our students to be in class with experienced pastors or other called workers and vice versa.
This year Winterim will meet from January 9-20, 2012. Availability of the courses depends on the students’ selections. There is limited dormitory space this year for Winterim. Dormitory rooms are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. If the dormitory is full, later applicants may have to make their own housing arrangements.
If you are interested in attending but have additional questions, you may contact Prof. James Korthals, Winterim coordinator, at email: korthalj@wls.wels.net or phone: (262) 242-8160. Those finding it difficult or impossible to register online may register by contacting the faculty secretary Diane Heisler either via email: heislerd@wls.wels.net or via phone: (262) 242-8141. Directed Research
Winterim students who desire to gain credit through a directed research project will approach a professor from the department relevant to the subject of his project. This professor will evaluate and assess a credit value for the directed project.
Projects are of various sizes. Twenty hours of work earns 1 Winterim credit.
If you choose directed research, there is an additional enrollment form to fill out. The form is available for digital download.
